What would provide better virus protection, especially with receiving digital photographs...?

Both services running virus scans on all their e-mail. So you are probably equally protected with either. A better thing is to be sure that you are running a virus scanner on your own PC which includes the scanning of all e-mails when you open them. If your scanner has that ability, there will be an option to turn it on or off in its set up or control panel. Make sure it is on.
