Philosophy started with logical debate.
Remember that logic does not equal truth. Logic, brought to it's end, usually produced paradox, such as the 'nothing moves' principle (name that Greek! Grecian?) because everything that goes from one point to another must cross half the distance, then half again, then half again. Millions of operations later, it is still only halfway.
Philosophy is frequently the same thing: someone trying to jar one's perspective so they arrive at a different understanding, usually one the philosopher is leading you to.
Don't take any one school of thought too seriously. Mostly it is word games to confuse you, so you end up agreeing with whatever you are told.

LOL! It's like asking what art is. There is no real definition of philosophy, so anything goes. Some people just get high off of their own "philosophical" supply. When you get too into your own world, you'll have a hard time communicating yourself to others, unable to keep a meaningful dialogue going. The average Joe gives superiority to confusion, so those who play with words, confuse and distract, usually win and can get away as being smart or philosophical.
EDIT: from the forwarded email I realize we're all innocent bystandards caught up in the middle of a gunfire in this question...why can't people just email each other privately? LOL

How do you know which is which - usually, you don't. It it is generally impossible to separate content from the ego which created it.
Wittgenstein said "Philosophy is a battle against the bewitchment of our intelligence by means of language. "
*Edit I believe that is exactly the point. Transcendental paradox*
