I am planning on getting a laptop in the next few weeks and was just wondering about built in wireless. Does it mean i wont have to stick a plug in it like my PC. Will the internet just automatically come up on the laptop?? Do u pay monthly still like you do with AOL, Tiscali etc? Does my house have to have a phone line for the internet to be able to work? Also Im in the US. Does it make a difference when I go back to the UK? If I have to pay monthly will it still keep coming out of my american debit card? Any information you can give will be very helpful.

Also recommend any good laptops? Not overly expensive but reasonable.

A wireless internet connection in your laptop will mean it will operate on an open wireless network in it's area without any wires. As most of us know there is not free wireless internet across the world so it will depend where you are. Some cities do have citywide wireless internet and in that case you would only need the laptop. Assuming there is no free wireless internet then you need wireless internet installed in your home. You would need to check with that company as to their terms no one here can tell you how your ISP in your area would operate. Not sure but i would think WIFI standards would be the same here and in the UK with the need of the obvious ac adapter. No you don't need a phone line wireless internet using the cable connection like a cable modem does. Most large cities at the least have internet cafes with free wireless service. Check your area, Since you didn't say where you live can't tell you much more than that sorry

If you already have a plug as you call it in your pc you are probably already connected with a wireless router. So your laptop just picks up the wireless network. A good laptop and very cheap is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li 1705 which just cost me £299 in UK. It is a basic computer but connects to the Internet without any problems. Hope this helps

The laptop contains a wireless card that picks up signals from the wireless router (separate device hooked up to the modem DSL service contained in your house) so you dont have to be restricted to the cable length. It doesn't mean that you have Internet anywhere you go. The service requires no other payment then the high speed service that you already have in your home but it does require the "wireless router" to send the signal out.

The gentlemen above goes into a lot of city wide networks and such. While in theory this is true 99.9% of establsihed citues have yet to have this type of service available. Libraries, Universities, Starbucks & McDonalds (does require an additional service provider in these places) offer this service while in there locations. the ability to use wireless shoud be available in the U.K. if high speed Internets services are available you still jsut need to hook up a wireless router to that cable modem etc.

What it means is that you have a wireless network card built into the laptop. This enables you to connect to a wireless router, or access point. Sometimes these routers and access points can be connected to the internet. Manufacturers include a built in wireless network card so that you can use the internet in your home anywhere without cables. But you have to have a wireless router to do so.

Hi. A wireless card is built in to the laptop. Its antenna can pick up signals when they are available. Some are free. You would use your browser to explore the internet. Hope this helps.

wireless network means you can connect to the Internet without plugging the cable into your PC from your modem.
