There were some areas on the Mississippi that were free. The slaves would try and get to those areas and hope they were not sent back.

The underground railway would smuggle and hide slaves from their pursuers and then move them on to another safe place to hide (stops, like on a railroad) until they got to safety.

A small note, the underground railroad actually ran into Canada, since even free states didn't want to take in running slaves. In fact, in some of the free states, blacks were not allowed into certain counties or cities. They would be shot on sight at times.

The Mississippi doesn't run North, it runs South into the Gulf of Mexico...
