Scientists have found a new threat to the planet: Canadian beer drinkers.

The government-commissioned study says the old, inefficient "beer fridges" that one in three Canadian households use to store their Molson and Labatt's contribute significantly to global warming by guzzling gas- and coal-fired electricity.

"People need to understand the impact of their lifestyles," British environmental consultant Joanna Yarrow tells New Scientist magazine. "Clearly the environmental implications of having a frivolous luxury like a beer fridge are not hitting home. This research helps inform people — let's hope it has an effect."

The problem is that the beer fridges are mostly decades-old machines that began their second careers as beverage dispensers when Canadians upgraded to more energy-efficient models to store whatever Canadians eat besides doughnuts and poutine.

University of Alberta researcher Denise Young, who led the study, suggests that provincial authorities hold beer-fridge buy-backs or round-ups to eliminate the threat — methods that Americans use to get guns off the streets.

Yah. America produces like 70% of the world's waste and makes up like 3% of its population. We suck up more oil everyday than all of Africa combined. I'm not worried about Canadian beer fridges.

And it annoys the s.hit out of me that people are just now starting to become all abuzz about global warming. Let's destroy the earth for a century (the 1900s) and pretend like it won't do anything, then worry about it when we're already ******* and it's too late. Scientific concensus is that there's no way we're going to reverse global warming, no matter how many pointless fluorescent bulbs we buy.

So how about we talk about ... what we're gonna do when we run out of (the non-renewable resource) oil? I don't hear a word about it.

dont know why they took so long to jump on the Canadians, the Aussies heard about it years ago but then we did have a bloomin great hole in the ozone layer above our heads, old fridges, good old fossil fuel and even farts were mentioned, yup cattle farts, darn that beef industry.

Fridges manufactured before 1999 consume up to three times the energy of new fridges. On average they consume about 1 MWh of electricity per year costing the household about $160 and resulting in approximately 1 tonne of carbon dioxide emissions per year. They also contain ozone depleting CFCs and add 150 watts of peak demand to an already constrained electricity network. (Source DEUS NSW Greenhouse Abatement Scheme)

Global warming is everyone's fault. Gas emissions alone in populous cities like LA or New York are horrendous. Makes me laugh though. Blame Canada! lol But I guess, it's always easier to point the finger at someone else rather than at themselves.

As long as they are keeping good quality beer in those fridges, I don't see the harm.
Global Warming - China's fault?
Their industries put out a lot more toxins than Canada ever could.

No "global warming" is only an American problem since the founder of the religion is American. It will soon have it's name changed to "America is trashing the Planet" and they will file a 503.c
