when Christianity became the governing body of the western world and the pope had the say as to what was a holy day where is the name Holiday came from the church ran the world we now call the western world that's when it was in the 10th century that Christmas was celebrated by the mass on Christ-mas day that's where the name comes from Christ and mass so i think to the dooms day book it was first worship ed by peasants in the 10th century after the Norman conquest but was worship ed before that by priests abbots and monks
