The term Third World came about when the most powerful countries were aligned as Communist/AntiCommunist. Some nations, like India and Egypt, decided not to participate. They called themselves the non-aligned nations, or the Third World. Then Third World became associated with less-developed countries, and that's mostly what it means today. People still say Third World, but there's not a first or a second.

That First World, ... Third World stuff was the lingo used during the Cold War. The communist nations were considered Second World (the USSR and it's satellite countries, and possibly China, but I'm not sure there).

I read that the Philippines is third-and-a- half. It is far from being a 3rd world when compared to parts of Africa, maybe a 2nd with a B-minus.
