It canonly be used as a data trasfer cable if it has a lump in bertre that says "data transfer USB device" or similar. Or if it's 2 USB network cards back to back.
A simple USB male-male cable is simply an odd connection cable

I'm not 100% on this, but that sounds like a bad idea. Unlike firewire, USB is not designed to work like a networking device, so at the very least if it is possible it would require special software.

But I wouldn't even try it because USB carries power, and plugging two standard usb plugs into two computers is more than likely to just cause a short. While the voltage is low enough you aren't likely to bust anything, you could be unlucky and end up with the usb ports going bad.

Either way, it sounds like more trouble than it is worth. Look into setting up pc to pc network using crossover ethernet cable or ad-hoc wireless and you'll be safer.

It needs to be a crossover USB cable. A regular double ended USB cable isn't going to work.

Works for devices like external cd-burners and the like. Kind of rare nowadays. There's an input port in the drive and one in your computer.
