Yes.. by giving vouchers, not cash. You're alloted a certain amount according to what you discuss with the dietician and how much you qualify for and what you can consume in a month. Then, you use the vouchers at stores that accept them for payment of the items listed on the vouchers. You can get less if you want, but no more than what is specified on the vouchers. The dollar amount spent is listed on the voucher, and the receipt from the store is attached to the voucher. You sign it that's it.
It's all Government related and regulated.

I think what she means is, to make sure the vouchers are not being sold, illegally transferred etc. In this case yes. If someone is found guilty of fraud, just as with any other government program, the person will be required to repay and will also be subject to jail time and fines. Just because the person recieves a voucher does not mean that there is no financial accountability. Government funds pay for the vouchers.

When you get WIC they give you checks for every month, three months at a time. You have to recertify every 6 months. They give every person on the program checks, which they get back from the grocrey store. The checks tell you exactly what you are allowed to buy and how much you have to work with right on them. It is an income based program, and most people qualify. The income limit for a family of 4 is about $25k a year. You cannot sell these checks, they have an identification number right on them that matches the ID card they give you, which needs to be shown with each purchase.

I remember having monthly "meetings" at WIC to go over finances. I know they make sure your income is below "average". We were on WIC for a year, and one month, my husband made some extra money, and we were officially off WIC. From what I remember...they give you vouchers for food that you have to use within a certain amount of time. I don't remember ever receiving "funds".

Of course there are people who improperly use WIC, just like any other welfare program. Lots of the formula being sold on eBay comes from WIC (people breastfeed but say they are formula feeding, get name brand formula for free and sell it on eBay). In my moms group people have talked about being on WIC a few times and there have been comments about how much they give you and that its WAY more than they actually use (as far as cereal and cheese) but they get it anyways because they can. One person said one time they only got what they needed and the grocery checker looked at them like they were crazy because they weren't getting everything they were allowed (the checker actually said to her, "you could just give the extra food to a friend"--that's welfare fraud!). But I hope that most people receiving WIC are using it responsibly.

You can't misuse wic coupons. You only get coupons for certain foods for pregnant moms and for babies/toddlers until they are 5.They go by your income and check frequently to make sure you're still eligible.
It's a great program because you also are obligated to speak in person to dieticians, so that you know how to cook/ eat healthy meals too. Also you fill out paperwork on what your child eats and drinks, your child gets weighed and measured and also an iron check to be sure your child is healthy.

All you can get is certain foods for the mother and child. They are very limited as to what is covered and nothing is fancy. Since there is no money changing hands, the funds will always be used properly.

The only way I can think of that someone could misuse WIC vouchers/checks (which you can only use for the products printed on them) would be if someone were dumb enough to "sell" them (but the person whose name is printed on them is the only one that can use them). I suppose if someone did that and got caught, they would face the same criminal charges as misusing/selling foodstamps, which I think (and I could be wrong) is a felony offense.

You don't get money. You get checks that are good for only certain food. They are more like coupons than anything else. they have printed on them what you can get and how much of it.
