If you're clicking greed and your friend is clicking need, he will always win.
If you both click greed (or both click need), the chances of winning are random. Clicking it faster, first, or whatever won't have any effect on your roll.
If you've changed your looting style to need before greed, the person who needs it (a cloth robe versus a piece of plate armor) is going to get it; thus, if you're a warrior and your friend is a priest, and a cloth robe drops, your friend will get it based on his class.

Even if you click last the button last it doesn't do any rolls until the entire group clicks need/greed/pass. It then does rolls and whoever has the highest random roll gets the loot. It will however count any "need" rolls higher than "greed" rolls. If you buddy is winning it means he is hitting need when you are hitting greed. You want a fair shot, hit the same button he does. Otherwise tell your "friend" to stop being a greedy S.O.B.
You should only need on items that are upgrades for you, hence the "need before greed". Hitting need on every piece of loot that comes up is a great way to get kicked out of groups.

Its 100 percent random.. mostly.
Ok yes there are people that have hacks so they always win the diceroll, but other then that the greed roll is random.
Heres a tip. If the item is BOP and/or its something you can use its safe to roll Need at lower lvls.
If the item is better then what u have then roll Need regardless.
Once u get into the latter 20's and up, make sure to decice about BOP itmes ahead of time with your group. Enchanters can break them into mats which are then rolled for with /diceroll.

I always believed that need took precedance over greed and if need rolls took place then the dice roll it out over the needs and declare a winner. I have played for 2 years and I have NEVER seen someone who selected greed beat out someone who selected need before.
