what is a face cord? referring to wood?

looking for wood for the winter and have seen several ads stating face cords available

A face cord is a stack of wood that measures 4ft high-by 8ft long. The length of the face cord is anywhere from 1 ft to app 18 inches. The basic in the earlier years was 1 ft. But now you can order it in most any length, but you pay more for the longer stick. The full cord, which is 4ft high x 8ft long,z 4 ft wide was originally cut in 4 ft lengths for the paper mills. to make paper products. They would remove the bark, and then it would go through a machine that peeled it in thin sheets. Also, the wood for the paper mills was soft wood. Wood cut for heat, was hard wood. There is an unending argument over what a face cord is, and will probably continue. But a face cord is essentially a smaller part of a full cord. We don't cut wood 4ft Long anymore, that i know of. Not for home use anyhow. FACT. I am 83 yes old, came from Vermont and worked in the lumber woods. Been there, done that. [ my figure above of 18 inches, should have been 16 in, sorry]
