Okay, after a small research I decided to but an Orion, 70mm, refractor (whatever that means). Is my first telescope. I haven't open it yet but it struck me the big "Made in China" sign on the box. Don't wanna sound biased but I was expected to be American made.

No but more and more are being made in China and eventually all will be made there because of the cheap labor there.

No not all are made in china,, I have a tasco and it was made right here in the USA But I dont know if they still do because I have had it a long time,, as mentioned above the labor unions had nothing to do with companys leaving america,, The north American Free trade agreement is what caused the mass exodus of american products to move over seas to exploit next to free labor and make an astronomical profit, its called GREED

It may be manufactured in China, but it was probably designed in America. The labour is so cheap over there that it's dificult to find a big company that doesn't use it. If you want an American made one, you're going to have to find a small company, which is obviously a lot harder, and you cannot be assured of a quality telescope, although I'm sure most of them are.

There are lots of products made in China - and will continue to be for the forseeable future. Their cost of production is simply the lowest (or at least far lower than any other industrialized nation).

That doesn't mean you can't get a telescope made elsewhere - but you'll have to look and it will probably cost more.

It *MIGHT* be safer, or it might not. It will be more thoroughly regulated if it was made in, say, the US - but that doesn't mean it will be any safer - only that it will have passed stricter safety standards. Re-parse, re-read as many times as you need to understand the difference. Standards only reject stuff that has problems UNDERSTOOD by the rejecting government. Different technology may be far more dangerous but not have had any laws associated with them yet.

Telescopes, like everything else, are mostly made in China these days, with some coming from Taiwan. Meade and Celestron made their SCTs in the US until recently, but they are moving most of the work to China. American-made telescopes are mostly high-end products, now - apochromatic refractors (TEC, Astro-Physics, TeleVue (?)) and premium dobsonians such as Starmaster and Obsession.

Two Taiwanese companies, Synta and Guan Sheng Optical, between them make most of the mass-produced inexpensive amateur telescopes nowadays, which are typically sold under other brands. Synta do their manufacturing mostly in mainland China, not sure about GSO.

And both companies make perfectly good stuff.

There is really very little made in the USA anymore. The unions have driven the cost of labor to the point where it's nearly impossible for a company to show a profit in the USA.

Also, many Meade telescopes are still made in the USA.
