Because it's supposed to be a cross.. Xmas.. but to be honest, I think it cheapens Christmas. I never abbreviate it on things. Best wishes and Happy Holidays!

Sigh, children these days, and what passes for "education" are simply lamentable.
The "X" in "Xmas" is not an English letter "X" but a Greek "Chi". "Chi" is the first letter in the Greek word "ΧÏιÏÏοÏ", which translates into English as "Christ". Thus, the "X" is an abbreviation for "Christ". The practice is actually centuries old and was used by very religious people back when abbreviations were very commonly used for all correspondence and informal writing.

It is a symbol of a cross to represent CHRIST in Christmas. I personally don't like it. Some find it sacreligious, others just use it because they are to lazy to write out Christmas...

It's shorthand. It saves some time. I use it informally. I spell it out on Christmas cards and gifts.
