Mostly great answers. But if everything said is true how did they elect that guy in that city in Georgia who had been dead for two years, Mayor?

Both arejust a legal formalities. If you don't have either it does not mean you were never born or never dead,. As regards election of a dead man as mayor it may be he was a very nice guy and people did not want to severe relations with him just because he was no more. There are tribes in Africa who exhume the skeleton of the departed and it presides over the annual feast in his/her remembrance. in Hindus the dead are formally invited to receive the offering made at the time of their death anniversary. Death does no mean oblivion. Even if we disregard the mumbo-jumbo the links are alwaysmaintained with the departed in life.

Each governmental jurisdiction prescribes the form of the document for use in its purview and the procedures necessary to legally produce it. One purpose of the certificate is to review the cause of death to determine if foul-play occurred. It may also be required in order to arrange a burial or cremation, to prove a person's will or to claim on a person's life insurance.

Before issuing a death certificate, the authorities usually require a certificate from a physician or coroner to validate the cause of death and the identity of the deceased. In cases where it is not completely clear that a person is dead (usually because their body is being sustained by life support), a neurologist is often called in to verify brain death and to fill out the appropriate documentation. The failure of a physician to immediately submit the required form to the government (to trigger issuance of the death certificate) is often both a crime and cause for loss of one's license to practice. This is because of past scandals in which dead people continued to receive public benefits or "voted" in elections.

Death certificates may also be issued pursuant to a court order or an executive order in the case of individuals who have been declared dead in absentia. Missing persons and victims of mass disasters (such as the sinking of the RMS Lusitania) may be issued death certificates in one of these manners.

In some jurisdictions, a police officer is allowed to sign a death certificate. This is usually when the cause of death seems obvious and no foul play is suspected, such as a home accident or SIDS. In such cases, an autopsy is rarely performed.

The excuse given for the delay in issuing my sons death certificate in 2004 was that the forms did not show any means of employment. Since he was mentally ill and in a hospital in Sylmar, CA for 10 years he really was not available for work of any kind. Such is the stupidity of some county employees, mainly Los Angeles. When we received our copy it had the wrong date of death on it.

A death Certificate isn't necessarily for you more for your family. This just is proof that you are actually dead. And a death Certificate states and proves who is you next of kin and who is liable for legal things/issues you left behind.

Excellent question. Do you think you get a certificate when you are certified insane too? sounds like another government trick to tangle us up in red tape.
I've had to write and purchase several copies of others death certificates to take care of idiotic things that did not change a darn thing.

It's more for the people that need it to collect social security or insurance purposes. A long time ago people didn't have assets to fight over so a birth certificate was of no significance!

Unless you are one of those unlucky saps who is the last in the family line, with no issue and no one to care for him, most people will have loved ones who will want to know how their recently departed beloved died, especially if it is a sudden death that was unforeseen, ie, if the person was totally healthy and then collapsed and died. And it could be used to cancel a lease if the person paying the lease dies. Plus it's a record of your health, in terms of the final straw that broke the camel's back.

If there is no proof that you are dead, your identity can be stolen. Your social securtiy, retirement, and pensions can be continued after you are no longer entitled to them.

Also for genealogists, a death certificate helps them see the average life expectancy and health of their family members along with valuable locations for the family and names..

The death certificate is for your hiers to collect any benefits due them or for probate. Voters are not automatically taken off the polls upon their death...the polls are stricter now than before. Lots of dead people were voting for candidates...go figure
