Doing a business project and wondering if we should include utilities in the pro forma when all the workers work from home and there is no office. Business is based in New York City, if that makes any difference.

Save your utility bills! You local area may have a limit on the amount of space that can be used in your home to operate a business. When you file your taxes provide this information to your tax person, preferably a CPA or EA, they will use this information to calculate a deduction.

This also applies to employer required materials, such as tools or uniforms that you pay for out-of-pocket.

We provide a letter to all of our employees that authorizes them to maintain a home office because many of them live a considerable distance away from the office or travel for business purposes.

I have never heard of this benefit before. I have heard that they will provide things needed for certain internet connections & fax capability, but not for utilities. After all, are you going to pay them back for the money you save on communting & work attire?

No, but I think you can claim a portion of it as a business expense on your taxes. Call your accountant. He/She will know what's up!
