The answer to this question is as varied as people's interests. I myself like cats and dogs, but have had fish, and birds. I just prefer dogs and cats. You can do more interaction with a dog or cat. lap cats are so affectionate. A dog is another very intelligent affectionate animal. They really give you unconditional love!

Dogs and cats. But I only have a Betta. I have had cats but I hear that the best all time pet would be a dog. They are smart (just train them right) and you can cuddle up with them.

We have a dog, who is driving me crazy, was ready to get rid of him today, because we just picked up a new cream colored sectiional and of course he went outside and came in and was so excited that he jumped up on it. What a mess, then I tried to clean it and just made it worse, now when my girls get home from work, they are going to be mad, at me and the dog! What a day! Okay, thanks for the question, I feel better. I will just buy some cleaner and try to do it the right way.

I love all the animals you mentioned. But apparently NOT the type of dog St. James a has. They must be anti woman!

I love my doggy Spike, when I get home he is just SO happy to see me. I swear he smiles. I also love my cats Josie and Sparky. They give love, but just don't want to seem like they are giving it away like Spike.
