I'd say that your brakes are shot, and probably leaking fluid. I just had mine fixed (01 Focus, rear brakes only), and it cost about $650 for new shoes, drums, wheel cylinders (since they were the source of my leak) and labour.
Good luck!

If the fluid level is OK I would guess that the master cylinder is bad, they go bad this time of year at a higher rate because of the colder weather. If the fluid is low you may have a leak at the rear wheel cylinders if you have drum brakes in the rear. Check for fluid on the inside of the rear tires and brake backing plate. Being a Jeep you should also look for leaks from the metal brake lines under the frame.

The best thing to do is to take it to a reputable shop and have it inspected. More than likely, a brake line or a wheel cylinder(located on back wheels) has ruptured.Causing brake fluid loss, and loss of brake pedal. The light came on because alto of times there is a fluid level switch located in the brake fluid reservoir. It is located under the hood, drivers side, up under the windshield area. As for a quote, that's nearly impossible without inspecting it first. It could need only one part, or many. Hope this helps some.

Fluid loss somewhere obviously. You can tell, just crawl under the car and see which wheel is wet with brake fluid. As a rule, rear cylinders go out before calipers do, so start there.
If you did blow a caliper, they run about 40-60 dollars depending on where you get them. Brake pads run about 15-40 dollars depending on the quality you get and where you get them. If the caliper was leaking, replace the pads regardless of the life left on them.
If you blew a rear wheel cylinder, the cylinders run about 10-25 dollars depending on where you get them. If they are leaking, replace the shoes as well, brake fluid soaked brake shoes are a disaster looking for a place to happen. Shoes are anywhere from 15-90 dollars depending on the quality you get and where you get them.
So in answer to your question about low fluid vs. brakes being shot....probably both.....

There's a few things that could be going on here.
1st: A leak could be present allowing you reservoir to run low and get air in the system.
2nd: You could have a bad Master Cylinder. If the seal inside the Master Cylinder goes bad, it will not hold pressure to brake pads.
3rd: Your brake pads could be low enough to drain the fluid out of the Master Cylinder causing air to enter brake system.
I would definitely have it checked out by a Brake specialist, and unless you have to replace the Master cylinder or a Brake caliper. I don't see the total bill getting over $300.00.

yes seems like leaking fluid cost depends on what is leaking but it should not be that expensive if its leaking fluid you will not have to have the shoes or drums changed probally brake cylinders or pipes or worst the brake servo
