Our family dog can communicate very effectively. When he wants to go outside, he stands by the door and paws it. When he wants to "play" he brings a toy to me and drops it at my feet, implying that I should toss it and play fetch with him. When I am sitting down and he wants attention, he will put a paw up on my lap.
He can indeed communicate.
And, something I have observed of late. I have concluded that our dog can have "dreams" when he sleeps. Once the other evening when he was on the floor asleep, his tail started wagging wildly for a few moments, then quite. Also, he has growled while asleep.

Sure. Pets are very smart and communicate in many ways. They also talk, but we just don't always understand what they are saying.

Yes, my cat does. He knows what the sound 'cat food' means when spoken and will miaow back if that's what he wants.

Absolutely! My cat is Very expressive. Once he even pooped right on my ottoman when we changed where we would let him sleep at night. He was VERY angry.

Oh yes! Whenever my pet buffalo is on stage he communicates with me secretly by ad-libbing the script.
