"Die religion ...... ist das Opium des Volkes."

"Religion ........ is the opium of the people."

Karl Marx: Kritik der Hegelschen Rechtsphilosophie.

In other words, what Karl Marx was saying is that, in the same way that opium can deaden the mind and ambition of the upper classes (in his day opium was for the wealthy) then religion has more or less the same effect on the masses.
It keeps them from complaining of their lousy situations in life by promising great things (Heaven) after their death.

Religion is the opium of the people. Religion is a construct of the ruling elite to keep the working classes quiet and behaving. The promise of eternal salvation is the salve for a life of pain and misery.

the marxist theory of religion is that

'Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.'

It is Karl Marx's theory.
