Okay, I just found out I was 12 weeks pregnant two weeks ago. I was on the depo shot, and wasn’t trying to get pregnant, but it happened. Doc said everything looks okay with the ultrasound and heartbeat and all that. Its just I smoked pot the WHOLE first trimester everyday after work and on the weekends, and on days off, due to various pains (not looking for judgment). But I quit as soon as I found out I was pregnant, and now since I quit two weeks ago (I am 14 weeks pregnant now) I have be HORRIBLY sick in everyway, I have missed a lot of work now due to this sickness that’s how bad it is! I thought I was doing the RIGHT thing by quitting when I found out, but it seems like I am in worse shape since I quit smoking, should I have wean myself off pot instead of quitting cold turkey? I told my doc about the smoking during my first visit, and he said even though I did smoke the whole first trimester, he doubts it caused any effects..was I right to quit cold turkey? Experiences?

I have smoked throughout my pregnancy to control Hypermesis Gravaderum (Medically treated all-day sickness) I also take a daily pill (Anzamet) to help control the nausea - I am currently 27 weeks pregnant (have gained a whole 4 lbs so far)
My doc tells me that it won;t harm the baby as cigarettes do. She even gave me information regarding the very limited studies done and there are no clear results.
It helps me, and my baby is still with me and growing well.
I do have to say - as a life long pot smoker, you do get a "with-drawl" effect that can add to your normal morning sickness. After about 8 to 10 days it should be a bit less. Most women that suffer morning sickness tend to see an improvement by around 18 weeks. That when the hormones tend to level a bit. Others - like myself - suffer the entire pregnancy. I was sick until a day after my daughter was born, and I anticipate being sick just as long with this one. It has been worse this time for me. I was able to quit when pregnant with my daughter. This time, its what keeps us both living.

Smoking ANYTHING is bad for your child. Good for you for being honest with your doctor. No, pot is something you can do cold turkey. You may be feeling effects of withdrawls (some people get them some dont) but you have done the right thing by quitting. Continue to keep your head up and when you feel sick or like you need to smoke remember that you are makeing yourself more healthy for your child. I had a friend who went through the same thing... quit cold turkey... had some withdrawls (not as bad as yours) but the baby was just fine. Good luck and congrats on the new addition to your family.

Yes the problem that your experiencing is that the pot was suppressing your morning sickness that is another reason y people with cancer smoke pot. I think that you would have experienced this if you did not smoke pot at all. But you know this could be a good thing this could give you the opportunity to stop smoking pot all together. And I am not judging you It will get better just give it time.
Good luck to you and your soon to be mommy hood

I'd like to congratulate you for being able to quit pot cold turkey. I was smoking pot, but I was smoking cigarettes for a very long time throughout my pregnancy. I quit roughly 2 months ago, and am due next week. If I could turn back time, I would have quit sooner. It's hard trying to quit something you're addicted to. I'm glad you quit for your baby. I know it's hard, but I feel quitting cold turkey's the quickest and surest way to quit!
Congrats on your baby and quitting!!! =)

The reason you are sick now is because you have morning sickness. You didn't have it before because you were smoking. It's not because you quit cold turkey. Pot is non-addictive unlike tobacco. Sometimes people smoke pot BECAUSE they have nausea, like people going through chemotherapy. Do not start smoking again, you just have to put up with the morning sickness. It shouldn't last too much longer. Hang in there.

Yes you were right to quit cold turkey. Give it a little while, I am sure it will get better and besides you need to quit for the baby. I hope you don't go start smoking it again after the baby is born. You did a great job by quitting, keep it up!

yes you were right to completely quit, and you should remain smoke free for many reasons that you already know. Anyways, as far as being sick now that you've quit is because pot is an anti-emetic. Talk to your doctor, there are many things that are safe to take for horrible nausea and vomitting while pregnant. (trust me, I used them all). Reglan, Zofran, Compazine for example. For now, don't start smoking again. Try chewing gum that also helps with bad preg. nausea!!
