Not really.

If you think about it, there are many ways in which things might be equal. They might be equal in weight, appearance, value, production time, age, etc, etc. It could be argued that no two objects are exactly identical in every way, after all.

A clause like the one you describe can often be found in contexts where it is important to say exactly what kind of equality you are referring to. Legal and scientific documents, for example.
