NO, if you come here on a tourist visa with the intention to work they will send you back to your home country on the next plane!!

if you're american and you're already there as a tourist you will probably not be able to get one. but, you can leave the country and apply for one - that's what i did - flew over to new zealand for a week to apply for my visa then came back. also check out www.bunac.org - they help you arrange your visa

No. Once here, you can't change your visa. If you really want to work, go to New Zealand and apply for a work visa from there.
