it was really had to tell what my son's first word was because it wasn't really a word so much as he was just making the sounds. he was somewhere around a year i think when he first said momma. however, the first time that my son called me mommy and knew that was my name was way more special than the first time he made the "momma" sounds.

About 8 months.... mama, papa, baba....
But I don't consider these his first words. They are all just sounds they make without any true meaning..... Only because pretty much anybody could be associated with any one of those words (although I most commonly got called "baba."). My mother was called papa a lot...
The true moment when he really got it right was when he was 9 1/2 months and he pointed to a balloon and said balloon. Every time he saw one, he'd get really excited and say, "Buy-ooooooon!" He never called anything else a balloon. Maybe he is going to grow up to be a clown....

My daughter was about 14 months when she started saying "mama." Her first word however was "thank you." She is 16 months now and still struggling with most words, even ones she already knows but, we are patient because we know she will go through both phases of improvement and regression as she learns how to speak.

My daughters first word was Nana at 7 months. My sons first word was Daddy of course and that wasn't until 9 months. Once they both learned Mama it was all I ever heard.
My daughter spoke in clear paragraphs at 13 months and my son who is just over 3 is speaking in short sentences. They are all so different.

My first baby said mom at 5 months and meant it. And she could say hi and mean it at 7 months. My oldest was very advanced for a baby and did everything early.
My second baby is 5 months old and hasn't said anything yet.

My 6 mo has been saying "Dada" since he was about 4 1/2 months old. I think he's just now beginning to mean it though. I try and get him to say "Mama" and he just smiles at me and says "Dada".
