we just started solids (well baby food I mean) a few weeks age. he has his next ped appt in about a week but until then, can someone tell me just tentatively how many servings of each I should feed him? I know he gets most of his nutrients from the formula still, I'm actually wanting to make sure I don't give him to much fruit or meat or whatever. He is in the stage 2 little stubby jars.

I KNOW that his nutrients are coming from formula? I am not worried about nutrients, I just want to make sure I am not feeding him too much. I said all that in my question, but maybe reiterating will help me to get answers from people who are actally answer my question instead of just people scanning the title then making up something "smart sounding" just to get a point. Not trying to be mean, but answer the actual question! Also dont tell me its too early to start solids. thats not what I am asking. my ped. oked it. just didnt tell me how much and I forgot to ask.

according to some of the inserts on the baby food containers it says to make sure to give your baby 2 1/2 servings of fruits and veggies everyday. (thats combined not each!)
so like some at breakfast, lunch and dinner!

it really doesnt matter at this age how many servings of fruits, veggies or meat he is getting. all there nutrients is coming from formula or breast milk. I feed my daughter fruit and cereal for breakfast, a veggie and some of whatever i am eating for lunch and a meat with a snack size of vanilla pudding or apple sauce for dinner. but she is 9 months and started baby food when she was three of four months. I try to feed her more because she is really skinny but once they start crawling it seems they lose weight. But she eats what she wants Im trying to think at six months what was my daughter eatng...I wasnt doing a lot of meats then... I know i found a couple of brands that have stage 2 meats and i would do them occasionally but not too often because i felt that it was harder on her tummy, but if he can handle it then keep doing it! hope i was some help

Mommyto3: I saw that as well on a pack of gerber.. you know what my daughter has a dr appt in 3 hrs ill ask and see what my ped thinks!! Ill be back

Do not worry about that yet. Just give him the bottles/breast milk first and make sure he gets that. The offer him the solids. Pick what you think looks good.

Personally I started with the veggies like peas and squash because I knew my daughter would love fruit and tried to introduce the food that might be more of a struggle.

You do not need to worry about 1 fruit 1 veggie 1 meat in a day. I stuck with peas at every meal for a week and then brought in squash or something else. Later when she was eating more than 1 container o the stage twos at a meal I brought in a fruit.

Kids do not get bored of foods like we do. They actually do better with the repetition of one thing.

You can even hold off on the meats until a few months later if you want. They are a bit harder to digest and it might be worth getting him into the solids first. Either way though he will be fine.

Try Yobaby yogurt. Mine LOVE it, but give that after the other food you want him to eat. Now that my youngest is almost 1 year, she will eat turkey meat, beans, pasta, roast, green beans, eggs....Everything!

It sounds like you are doing fine. Keep it up.

There is no one 'right' way to do this. All babies are different and progress at different speeds. Just remmeber that solids ARE 'just for fun', so you don't want him decreasing his breastmilk or formula. You can give the solids in any order, and at any time of day that's convenient for you. (Though it's wise to not introduce new foods at bedtime -- if he has a bad reaction you'll be up all night.) It sounds like you've started off well, a small amount, once a day. Now you can follow his lead. If he seems happy with that, stick with once a day. If he loves his solids and seems hungry enough, you could add a second meal in a couple of weeks, or a month. You can give one food at a meal, or a couple of bites of each of several. (BTW, current trends are to offer meat earlier than used to the case. It isn't hard to digest, and is a good source of iron and zinc and protein. So while your doc recommended waiting, other docs would say it's ok to give meat now. Whatever you choose to do is ok.)

The point of feeding solids at this age it just to begin introducing the idea of food, not to provide any significant nutrition. Babies really only need breast milk (preferred) or formula for the first year. Offer your baby small amounts of food and let him eat however much he seems to want.

you really don't have to give a special serving amount, since most of the nutrients are in the formula, but try starting off with 2oz of one type of food a day once a day for three to four days, then move on to a different one for three to four days. this will help to determine if your baby will tolerate/like the food and also help to determine if he is allergic to what ever you are feeding him. hope this helps.

You shouldnt be feeding him anything but cereal and cereal with a little fruit in it right now. But if you are feeding jar food, he should only be in stage 1 at this point.

Did your pediatrician suggest feeding him solids so soon? I would continue on the feeding plan suggested by your child's doctor.

If I remember correctly it goes like this:
4-6 months - rice cereal.
6-7 months - cereal with fruit.
7-9 months - orange vegetables
9-10 months - fruits & veggies
10-12 months - meats, dinners & table finger food.
12 months - Whole milk and table food
