The last job that I had, only lasted 6 months and I went into a job agency today that told me, I had to have at least 1 year of job experience with the same company (minimum) after the conviction, (which happened a year ago) for them to be able to work with me. It's been HELL finding a job and needless to say, I am starting to get a little discouraged, after 3 months of no money coming in. I have my own apartment, I'm trying to go back to school in January, but most employers want me to live in the past and keep throwing my ONE MISTAKE in my face, instead of allowing me to move forward and giving me a chance to make a decent living for myself. I am telling employers the truth about my conviction, and it seems like they like me and my resume, but as soon as they see misdemeanor for petty theft, they immediately turn me away even for Industrial jobs. I don't want to lie, but it seems that I have to, to get ahead.
If I tell them that I worked for my cousins limo business, will it work?

Most applications only ask for felony convictions and you said yours was a misdemeanor. Have you read the apps carefully?

Jobs where they will perform backround checks/criminal checks will find out the truth, and want answers. It is great that you are willing to be honest.

I would definatly do what a previous poster said by hiring a lawyer, that takes payments, to get your record exponged.

Good luck!

Petty theft is just that petty. Even after you pay the price and do what the law requires you are labeled for life with a life sentence. They would rather give you this life sentence then being able to contribute to society and work. Once the price is paid the record/s should be closed to public view so one can make a living. How would you like to be over charged for robbery and assault cause you didn't stop for a security guard who probably steals because you were anxious. It is hell and how about no job for 11 years but being accepted as volunteer with children and money but not to be hired or pay? It is not a heinous crime, but it is treated as such and treated like a felony. There is a lot of shoplifting going on and they need to try something other than convictions, it can be a cry for help a bad decision and even if more than once should not close all job/career opportunity positions. It does not mean you will steal from the employer and would be a good employee because you would be grateful. And correctional institutions correct nothing. I think all convicted of petty theft need to get together and get laws changed. Many employed people including those in high level jobs steal from their employers and others. I knew a medical doctor who shoplifted but was not convicted because he was a doctor. If you had judges in your family you would not have been convicted.

Your state unemployment office can help you apply with employers that will not have an issue with this situation. They have specialists who work with convicted felons and secure them work after prison, you're not in that league.
Make an appointment to meet with a "worker" at your state unemployment office, you qualify being out of work now. Follow through with the leads they provide and I know you'll find an acceptable positon for at least a year to begin building a new resume entry. They can work with the employer as well that requires a probationary period for you to prove yourself.
Don't lie, it will not serve you well in employment or life. Use the resource your taxes have already paid for, employment assistance.

Unless the company is doing a background check i would leave it out on an application or job interview. Worse case they find out later and let you go but I doubt it. I work in IT in a manufacturing envirnment and they do background checks and if you lie about anything on your application they will find it out and you wont be hired....but many companies odnt do this and its bad you have to be sneaky about it but you have to do what it takes to survive. Just think about it like this. you think that same company will go to bat for you? You think they wouldnt fire you or lay you off to save a dollar? I think not. Most compnaies now days are so corrupt its unreal...do what it takes to live...you have a petty threft conviction big deal....

You need to talk to a local cheap lawyer who can file a motion to expunge.

If you haven't been in any trouble since and have shown remorse and done your time, whatever that may have been, it is likely a Judge with expunge the conviction.

It will especially help if you have no priors.

Having a criminal record isn't easy...and life being difficult after the conviction is part of the punishment.

It was more than a mistake, it's was a choice...you only regretted it after you got caught.
