pretty much what J.C. said but read this if you want to know where it came from.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo

in my opinion the term's usage today is pretty unrelated to its roots. when i think emo, i think skinny guys with shag hair, tight jeans, thrift store shirts, tattoos and horn rimmed glasses (where the "weezer" look came from). emo was traditionally what described a type of music with emotive lyrics and melodic punk and metal derived riffs. emo-core is an example of that. ahh, there's too much to say about it, just read the wikipedia article.

edit: dear jesus, i'm going to have to expound on this since a few of the other answers are so misinformed. emo was not originally related to goth. what people call "emo" now is a hybrid of pop, goth, and rock. originaly emo kids didn't wear makeup or act effeminate like they do now. the difference is that the kids that are "emo" now missed the boat big time and weren't even born yet when bands like Sunny Day Real Estate came out. I bet you ask any 15 yr old "emo" kid now who Fugazi or Sunny Day Real Estate are and they'll have no clue. Hot Topic is NOT emo. Cutting is NOT emo (it's a psychological problem for attention whores), boys in makeup is NOT emo, that's a goth thing, fishnets are NOT emo, that's also a goth thing. Hell, I wouldn't even put most of the bands out now in the emo category at all, it's more like popgoth. You won't see anyone over the age of 25 pretending to be "emo" because all of us were already there back in the early late 80s and 90s and trust me, what is called emo now, is very very far from what it was.

I've heard emo being defined as "the Smiths meets hardcore punk," which I could say is quite correct. Check out Sunny Day Real Estate, Cursive, Cap'n Jazz, Texas Is the Reason, ect, to listen to what emo appears like.

Emo=depressed, unhappy, goth, punk, disturbed person who thinks parents suck, life sucks, and might try cutting themselves for attention so they can feel a different kind of pain.
