I believe it's possible, but the problem with the scenario is that typically large fires in California are associated with winds blowing smoke out over the Pacific, and not back toward Missouri. Eventually, though, the winds turn around and blow back toward the east, so smoke may eventually make its way to Missouri. However, I think it's probably more likely that there was a more local source of pollutants that was making the moon orange.
