I have found them both to be too big, intrusive, and poorly-performing, and poorly supported. I would strongly recommend looking at something else. AVG has a free version that is highly regarded and much easier to work with. When I have been required to use a commercial product, I have used BitDefender, and have been very happy with it.
If you have to pick one of the two big ones, I'd go with McAfee, since it is "friendlier" in the long run. Norton is very hard to get rid of, and will pester you to pay for updates after it expires. I have met several people who have paid for the Norton updates, only to have Norton fail to realize that it's been updated! I'd rather have a virus than Norton on my system, any day.

The lesser of the two evils would be McAfee.
For the money go with AVG Internet Security Suite 7.5. Want to know why read link below.

In my opinion both are far to expensive in terms of money and computer resources for what they offer when there are so many good FREE programs out there that will do the same job.
Both Norton and McAfee are slow to boot and slow to shut down and use substantial computer resources. Additionally, the last time I looked (about a year ago) both were in the $60 to $80 range depending on which package you bought.
I'd recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and download and install the following FREE software.
AVG Antivirus Free Edition
Spybot Search & Destroy
Adaware SE Pro
These three are very good programs that will keep your computer well protected.
Here are a couple of other programs that will help to keep your computer tuned up and running well.
CCleaner
Registry Distiller
Check them out and save yourself some money.
Hope this helps.

I would also recommend Kaspersky or NOD32 antivirus. They are both generally much lighter on resources, have higher detection rates and great heuristics.
Avira AntiVir is also very good, but lacks a Web and Mail scanner in the free version (can't really complain about that though, because it is FREE).
The premium version does offer a Mail scanner, but does not scan incoming SMTP mail through googlemail, etc.

Don't use either one. They are bloated and tend to slow a computer down. I'm a computer tech and have not use either of the big two for many years now. And, I won't allow any of my customers to use them either. I always suggest that they use one of the free security programs that are available from the web. My personal preference is AVG, but Avast is a very good program too.
Here are the links to this software. I will also list the links to some anti sypware programs and a good firewall.
All of the following are free.

In my opinion neither. I would run Grisoft's AVG Free and use ZoneAlarm as a software firewall. Both are free and both are very good. But if I had to choose between the two I would choose McAfee
Zone Alarm:

Neither. Both are resource hogs.
Set up your own:
Use Firefox instead of IE
Use Thunderbird instead of Outlook
Use Grisoft's AVG
Use Spybot Search & Destroy
Use Adaware
All of these are free.

I hate them both equally. Both put unwanted and unneeded applications on your computer. I like Avira Anti-Vir myself. As a bonus, the personal edition is free!
