ok i know u could get pregnant if the girl is on top i just dont really understand why? if the guys sperm goes straight up i thought it wouldnt be able to reach the cervix and the egg i just dont understand... could someone please explain this to me? another thing is my friend has been taking this method and hasnt gotten pregnant in a year in half. are u sure its not true?

They SWIM! It doesn't matter what position you were in. Your friend is just incredibly lucky and a idiot for not being safer/naive.

Sexual position has NO effect on your ability to become pregnant when the penis is inside the vagina. A girl on top, bottom, or sideways can become pregnant.
First, in any kind of vaginal sex the head of the penis is facing (and often comes in contact with) the cervix (the opening to the uterus). This is true whether the girl is on top or bottom.
Second, sperm can stay alive inside a vagina for 24-48 hours after ejaculation. It doesn't all leave leak out. It can still enter into the cervix and fertilize an egg inside the uterus.
Think about it. You've got a teaspoon full of liquid inside you, and it only a tiny, tiny bit has to make it through an opening like the hole in a life-saver (The cervix is about the size and shape of a life-saver). Then, if you're fertile, usually about a week to two weeks before you supposed to start your period, and the sperm gets into that opening, you could get pregnant. I would say your friend is either very lucky, maybe hasn't had a lot of sex during the time she's fertile, or could have a difficult time getting pregnant, or all three. That doesn't mean you will be the same. And by the way, don't forget that a baby isn't the only thing you can get from having sex. And some of those things are far, far worse. Maybe you should consider a condom. Good luck.

Sperm are perfectly capable of "swimming" upstream. In fact, they are constantly moving, even before comming out. Some go up, some go down, some go in circles, they will regardless of what "position" the girl is in. They are driven to do it, and nothing will change that, unless they are malformed. They are sensitive to chemicals, pH, etc...
Your friend is lucky, and that is all. Eventually, it will come to an end. If you do not want to be pregnant, birth control used 100% correctly will significantly reduce your risk.

If you fill a cup with water and turn it upside down.....there's still gunna be water in the cup....it won't be COMPLETELY dry.
And sperm swims.....so it works hard to get up in you.....that's just what it does.
Sometimes people don't even have sex.....and the semen and sperm gets near the vagina and the woman gets pregnant.
It's like putting a little kid outsie a candy story....
the kid is gunna get inside and go where it wants to go!!!
