it seems like they face the same direction but as they graze the move across the pasture in the same direction and it seems like they are facing the same direction because they are generally moving in the same direction as a herd while grazing. when they are resting or sleeping the herd gets into a circular pattern where they have certain ones look out in a certain direction for predators or any harm

They don't unless they happen to all be moving in the same direction (such as to the feeder), or if something catches their attention (like you going out to observe them). They will also turn their backs to the wind on a day when the weather is bad so then they are all facing the same direction.

The keep their back to the wind so their smell gets carried in the direction a that a predator may be able to detect it.

There is always one direction that is most comfortable. It has to do with the direction of the wind and the sun.

They are a herd. They are usually slowly moving across the field as a group. And if there would be danger and they have to flee, they want to do it as a group.
