Because all to often people make up their own facts to support their own personal agenda. People ask for links to check if there is even the slightest validity to these typically insane rants.

Imagine if someone claims X. You read the person's claim about X, and you find it outrageous. You ask yourself if the person is making this up to get a rise out of you, and you wonder the validity of the response. The link, or any citation for that matter, is a means to back up your opinions and facts. Yes, it does have to be fact checked: if someone claims X and I find it hard to believe, I want to check the factuality of it, wouldn't you? Or are you just going to read what people claim, and cherry pick what you want to believe and what you don't?

Well, making claims without citing a source is not the best way to make an argument. If you are making an exceptional claim then you should at least be able to show where you got that claim. If you cannot find a single site on the entire internet that backs up the claim then your claim is cast into serious doubt.

Links are helpful to the asker. The instructions on how to use Answers recommend that links be used to illustrate a point or answer a question as long as it isn't spam. Cool down and take five - it's no big deal.

I only ask for a link when people start throwing around numbers and statistics.....which 99% of the time are made up by the poster. (e.g. - notice I didn't provide a link for what percentage of statistics are made up)
