I have an '07 Saturn Vue that we just bought about 2 months ago. I hadn't heard it before but lately if I turn the car on and step out of it and walk toward the back you can hear a slight "put-put" sound and there is this overwhelming smell of some kind of gas (not gasoline smelling) that makes me cough. We have an open carport. I had never had that problem with my other vehicle so I know its not normal. I just was wondering if it is an exhaust leak? Or what it could be?

The car is under warranty for 3 years, if it is an exhaust leak, do you think its worth taking it to the nearest dealership ( 50 miles away) to get it fixed by them, or paying someone else to do it here?

I don't think it's an exhaust leak, I think your engine has a miss in it, I would take it back to the dealer and have them put your engine on their machine to find out whats causing the misfire.

Place a large rag on the exhaust pipe opening at the rear of the vehicle. If the noise gets louder it's probably an exhaust leak. I'd always check to see if a warranty covers a repair before paying out of my own pocket.

It doesn't exactly sound like an exhaust leak. Maybe your catylatic (sp) converter? I would say, yes...it is worth driving it 50 miles to get it fixed, whatever it is. Its called maintenence! Its a new car....if u have the attitude that its no big deal....you won't have it for long...Good luck!!
