I thought it felt like having a huge impossible bowel movement except with the addition of a blow torch being placed there. Ya it hurt. To the woman who responded first - don't be surprised if you take the drugs. I had opted to have drugs but I labored at home most of the day. By the time I got to the hospital, there was NO TIME for meds. It was time to push. THey say a second birth is easier but I'll believe it when I see it for myself.

I've had two natural births and am planning a third. The pain not as bad as people fear and its over much quicker without the epidural. You also recover much faster and have no side effects. Personally I'm more scared of having a large needle stuck into my back then tolerating a half hour of pushing. When the baby finally emerges I felt nothing by then because I was naturally numb. Here's my secret: When you are in the second/early third stage of labor fill the tub in the birthing room (can just be a regular tub) with hot water and sink into it. It will take the edge off the contractions alot and your labor will progress just as fast. Plus your skin will be soft and pliable when you get out which makes it less likely to tear. My son was 9lbs 3oz and I did not tear. Just a suggestion. Sorry you had a bad time of it. Hope your next goes better.

Well I've never given birth to a watermelon so can't compare lol, but I have given birth to 5 children without an epidural. Sure labor hurts, but it's so worth it and no meds come without risk.

Well I've done it once with an epidural and the next three babies I opted for the epidural if that says anything about me. I don't consider myself a whimp but each time it amazed me at how intense the feeling was even with an epidural. My best decription is really, really intense pressure and pain then BURNING!
More power to you if you can do it without an epidural but here's a tip....you don't get any points for it!

I can't even describe the pain in words, but the only thing worse is a toothache!
The closest I can come to describing the sensation is that it feels as if someone is making love to you with a blow torch! The burn is UNREAL! Darn, why did I read this question? It's not a pain you forget at all, and now it's all flooding back! Thanks so much! LOL I went without an epidural and modern medicine with my first baby, and I learned a very painful lesson. There is no need to be in pain during labor, and I wish that more women would understand that and not feel like "wimps" for being as nature intended us to be during labor---NUMB from the waist down ! ;)

I am having my first in February. I don't plan to get an epidural. Women gave birth without being medicated for years and years so that is what I plan to do.

It honestly literally felt like a semi truck had a head on collision with my vagina. It felt like my hips and all my bones were just shattering.
To the lady who answered first, it is cool that you want to go natural, i have had one labour naturally, but just be prepared, it would not surprise me if you took any drug they offered. I wanted a natural the second time around too, but, it was excruciating, and i was actually stalling my labour, because i was so stressed. Once they gave me the pethidine, my labour started again. So by going naturally the second time, i was not doing either of us any good.
I understand that in the old days women did it naturally, but people also died from the flu back then. There is no point in suffering if there are options.
Just keep your options open, so then you are not disappointed, if it doesn't go to plan.

Call me weird and I am sure you will, but the delivery wasn't bad at all. Yeah there was some burning, but I was so concentrated on getting him out that the pain seemed to take backstage. I guess maybe the 28 hrs of terrible back labor that preceded the actually delivery made the pushing that much easier! Good luck!
