I think I might be getting there... I'm slowly detaching myself from the people I "love" -- purposefully -- they really aren't worth it.

Do you think it might be genetic? My mother is also a pretty cold and bitter old woman... As I grow older, the more I think I'm beginning to take after her...

While some personality traits may very well be genetic... I would say most likely this is a learned one from the course of your life.

It will be hard to break from that cycle... but you can do it if you WANT to... if not.. well it's your life and I have no place to judge.

Its not genetic, don't listen to anyone who agrees with you on that point.

Likelyhood is you did pick it up from your mother, but its a good thing you've spotted it.

Most important thing you can do now is realise you have a choice. You are choosing to distance yourself, you are choosing to feel like this. This is even more tha case if you are trying to put it down to genetics!

Face your problems, decide to turn things round, decide you don't want to be your mother.

You have to be with people with the same interest, the same thinking. Just because someone is your relative, doesn't mean you have to be around them all the time. I don't hang around those relatives that I don't get along with, but I don't grow "cold", I will lend a hand if they need me but I just don't hang around them. I surround myself with people I like....

Surround yourself with positive people. If your environment is cold you will feel cold and unhappy. If you bring warm people within your circle you wont feel cold anymore.
