By threatening to flog a British teacher who allowed her pupils to exercise a right to democracy. If their democratic decision was offensive, shouldn't their parents be the ones flogged for failing to instruct their children? After all, if the children, brought up in the faith, saw no offense, why should a person who was not brought up in the faith? If this woman is convicted, I for one will be lobbying hard to have all aid to Sudan cut immediately and their ambassador sent packing with his tail between his legs. I plan to get a petition started on the Downing Street website if this happens, anyone interested in a link to sign it?

Shy Girl - the teacher was there to teach English, not religion. The kids voted on the name for a TOY, not whether or not to invade another country or burn the school down. If their actions were SO offensive why had their parents and others responsible for teaching them in their religion raised the children to be so disrespectful?

"When I was young I would not have thought it was wrong to call a toy Jesus, but now I am older I can see why it would be (as a Catholic)."

Why???? - Seems like you're as much an intolerant zealot as these loons in Sudan! What next, bring back the crusades, burning at the stake? I think I'll change my dogs' names to Jesus and Muhammed just to p*ss the lot of you off!

For the record, I did NOT say blame the children I said blame the children's parents and those responsible for teaching the children the rights and wrongs of their faith. When 20 out of 23 children vote for the "offensive" option which is "inciting hatred" it is thier faith teachers' failing. But this charge has been trumped up ou of all proportion. Would a class full of overweight kids call a teddy "lard-****"? Would a class full of red haired kids call the teddy "ginger-minger"? I think not! So would a class full of muslim kids call the teddy "Muhammed" if it was considered so terribly offensive?

Kamran - who did you upset? So many thumbs down! Lol. Probably a lot in that, and the arms sales, and where the money is going.

Quick summary as I see it - we give Sudan money for "aid", they give it back to us for guns then they go shoot people with them. Western public get to hear about people being shot and ask governments to stop selling guns to them. Sudan gets ticked off. That may well be why, as you suggest, this poor woman has been used as "an example" she's just been unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and become their whipping horse.

Jail? - I think this is probably their face-saving decision. They know the uproar that there has been about this and the backlash there would be if she had been flogged (no pun intended). But to find her not guilty and free her would have looked like they had bowed to pressure. I wouldn't be surprised if in a day or two we'll see a public "merciful" early release just to show us how kind and civilised they really are.

Shy girl - and finally, I don't do angry, but I don't suffer fools and bigots gladly. You said that it would be wrong to name a teddy Jesus and I asked why, because I see that as yet more bigotry and intolerance. I must tell my friend Jesus to tell his daughter not to name her teddy after him, probably hadn't better call her Mary either, I'm sure that would upset someone. Where does stupidity end? With religion it appears to be infinite.

You suggested in your answer that I had said 1) that the children should be blamed 2) that you had said people should be punished if they named a teddy Jesus. I said neither, and you accuse me of not reading what you have written! What can I say, other than, 12 thumbs down, looks like 12 other people read perfectly well too.

I'll sign, but Kamran is probably right, it's gone political, she's just a pawn. They will probably let her go, send her back to Britian, but not before she found guilty, and sentenced to something barbaric. Then they can look like the good guys when they release with no punishment, kind of like Iran did when they entered Iraqi waters and kidnapped the British sailors. Of course it also wouldn't suprise me if they had to pay out some more cash, or deals on future aid. But we won't hear about that.

Many of the posters here have aired my opinions much better than I could. Totally agree with many of them, and I'll be first to sign that petition too.

When will people realise that these country's views and 'culture' are sickeningly offensive to our own. I mean to rule her as 'inciting racial hatred' for allowing her pupils to name a teddy, its beyond pathetic. We should cut all aid immediately, (I believe no aid at all should be given to any of these countrys, just imagine how many doctors, nurses, soldiers, police, firefighters and teachers that money could hire!) demand the money we have given them back and chuck out every damn immigrant and political ambassadors etc with immediate effect.

I will sign it but on two conditions that it does not include money that is going to help the 2 million refugees from the terror of Darfur. the other one is that it is a motion that says the EU should stop dealing with the government of Sudan if they do not let in peace keepers from other non African countries and stop stalling for their reasons. most likely to hide what they are up too.

They say, "This country has more money than sense, let's go over there and claim all the benefits we can and also get free medical treatment" (because no one in the NHS bothers to check that the patient is UK NHS registered

Money can't buy you love.

Just because a country gives money, does not make its citizens above the law. Even stupid barbaric laws based upon intolerance and ignorance.
