or does it have to be a special check or something??? I want to send it for my niece in Spain for X-mas and I don't want to send cash...

yes, she can deposit in her banking account.

as you'd guess, there will be a holding period of some length.


European banks are much better at handling cheques drawn on foreign banks and/or in foreign funds than US banks, so I'd recommend writing the cheque in USD and trusting that the Spanish banking system will handle the currency conversion.

Fees will apply, amounts unknown. Watch out for wire transfer fees from US banks ... they're quite high.

Banks do sell such things as "foreign drafts" -- fees unknown though.

I'd not be too surprised to discover that PayPAL or some similar service is actually cheaper than the banks.

Most European banks will accept cheques in dollars BUT they will impose some handling charge .. in UK that can be anything from $20 to $50 !

I suggest looking into doing an electronic funds transfer into her parents Bank Account so they can draw cash and give it to her on your behalf ..

I would send a cashiers check.the bank will propbly accept your personel check but would hold it till it clears ,which could take God knows how long ,Travelers check are another option

be much cheaper and just as safe to sent cash by register mail!!!
