my front USB port isn't working. i'm using a compaq presario which has card reader's and a USB port in front and 4 USB ports at the back. if i plug my thumbdrive in the back ports it works normally and if i plug it through my front port it doesn't work. i've tried checking the device manager and it says everything is working normally. what can i do? thanks.

Sounds like hte internal cable from USB port to motherboard is not connected.
Open case and check. Has the port EVER worked ?
If more than 1 socket on front, try the other, as they might have used 1 of the motherboard ports for hte card reader !!!

Yes, check connection first. The front side connections are not always installed. GO back to device manager and see verify you have the same number of USB Universal Host Controllers as you do USB ports, it should be 1 for 1, meaning you have same amount of Host controllers in device manager as you do USB ports to connect to, (dont count root hubs or enhanced controller hub). If you are 1 for 1 and you have no connection issue. go into your bios (reboot and hold down delete) and verify your USB devices are all enabled on your mother board. finally if all else fails reinstall your chipset drivers....

you can either try to reinstall the driver for your usb port controller or go to device management. right-click my computer, then select manage. Under device management, you can see if that drive letter is already assigned to something else or not. If that drive letter is used already, just pick another letter for that.
