In NCAA Division I, if a student-athlete has participated as an individual or as a team representative in organized sports competition, that kind of participation during each 12-month period after his/her 21st birthday and prior to initial full-time collegiate enrollment will count as one year of varsity competition in that sport. Any participation in organized competition during time spent in the U.S. armed services will be excepted.

Therefore, a 25 year old senior is the max for Div. I assuming they particpated in some organized activity in the sport. If they did not, or if it was as part of the military, their eligibility remains open and there is no limit on age.

It is not uncommon at BYU, with the Mormons taking their mission trips prior to completing the eligibility.

At lower levels, there are different rules. There is even a 59-year old grandfather playing college football (Div III) at Sul Ross this year.

theres no age limits on college basketball players..or any other college sports for that matter. As long as you're currently enrolled full time at a college, and have eligibility remaining, you can play. University of South Carolina had a football player a couple years ago named tim frisby who was 39 or 40.

As long as they have 1-4 years of eligibility left they can still play. Which means if they have not played more than 4 years of College basketball, they can still play. The same goes for all sports. We had a 40 something year old playing on our College football team after he retired form the Army. Their is a 50 or 60 year old man playing football for a college in Texas right now.

for Division 1, as long as your clock as not started, any age is ok. This means that your clock starts as soon as you are enrolled full time in a community college or university. You have 5 years of eligibility and 4 years to play it in for most sports. There may be extensions and considerations for illness that has stopped you or other circumstances. And if you are not good by 20 years old does not mean to give it up. Some people choose not to enroll in college full time (grey shirt) and work on their game. When they are ready to compete at a high level and have gotten good, then one can enroll full time at a community college or university. Then your clock begins. Anyone should always go for it and try if they are serious and want it that bad and as long as you will have eligibility left. Just think, when you are old, you don t want any regrets or "I wish I should have".

I remember a guy on Wake Forest a few years back who was 29. He was an Army vet who went into the service straight out of high school, and didn't enroll in college until his mid twenties. I don't believe the 25 year-old thing from above is correct. As long as there are no organized sports involved, your eligibility remains intact.
