Different people have varying reasons. Some of them are:
Compulsory attendance law
Free babysitting
School allow the parent to collect money
Others are doing it so follow the crowd.
Free lunch and breakfast
To get an education and make something of themselves.
Hopefully all or almost all for the last reason given above.

In the US its mandatory to educate those below the age of 16. You can home school them, but some people don't want to, can't, or don't have the time.
On the general question of why parents send their kids to school... Probably to make sure they have the basic skills needed to live an everyday life.

uh, to get an eduaction? nowwadays, you cant get a very good job without a high school education. Even MCDONALDS is rewuiring a high school diploma, which seems dumb, but is just an empty attempt to get people to finish high school. Sadly, half of my friends have already dropped out or are planning to when they turn 16.
