Carpet because I love using carpet freshener before I vacuum. Leave the hardwood for the dinning room and maybe even the kitchen, I say.

Depends on if you have pets, hardwood is easier to clean up if anything spills, but carpet the dirt falls in so it doesn't stick to your feet / socks. I'd prefer carpet because I'd rather vacuum than sweep and wash hardwood.

Slate....

but... Carpet is perfectly fine, as long as you have a clean household. Hardwood floors are uninviting, they make a room echo, and you end up covering them with rugs anyway.

If you choose carpet, just remmeber that you probably should change it every 10-15 years or so. A small price to pay for comfortable and attractive flooring which doesn't date and costs less than maintaining a polished floor.

I had always thought that I wanted carpet. Now that I have it, I find that the hardwood floors are much easier to care for.

hardwood every time. Carpet is naff.

I forgot to add that a hardwood floor with a beautiful turkish rug looks very stylish and gives a very homely feel too.. Carpets get full of crap and are much harder to maintain, invest in a good hardwood and your life will be much easier...
