You should not wear colorful items. Don't carry an ipod or MP3. Don't read a book or a magazine, unless it's the bible. Turn off your cell phone. Don't laugh or fart. Don't stay less than half hour. Stay at least an hour just to save face. Don't chew gum. (Someday I person went to kiss the cadaver and got gum stuck on his cheak. The morticians try to clean it out and the dead skin damaged.) Don't tell jokes. Act as seriously as possible. Pay your respects to the sad people. Don't say the dead person looks strange or stinks. Don't take a dog with you unless you're blind. Have some tissue because another person might need it. Don't try to meet anyone there. You don't want to tell your kids that you met your future spouse at a funeral. Don't have sex at a funeral. Do eat lots of donuts and drink lots of chocolate. Amen.

I've been to several funerals where people laughed including me. If it was someone you liked or loved who enjoyed life, laughter could be a natural response.
I agree with the person that said don't show up inebriated.
Beside that, I think you should just act naturally.

probably shouldn't open the casket if it's closed.
probably shouldn't hit on the widow or widower.
probably shouldn't say out loud when entering the room.."geez, who died in here, it's too quiet".
probably shouldn't crack jokes.
probably shouldn't dress tacky or cus alot.
probably shouldn't try to race the hearse at the stop light.
There are lots of things one should not do at a funeral. I guess be on your best behavior even if you didn't like the person or know the person really well.

Unless an Irish wake don't tell jokes or laugh. Do not refer to the deceased in negative terms or profane ones either, those would apply at most Irish wakes also unless the profanity was positive-"He was a good S##O#B####" and I will miss him would be okay.

You should not forget to turn off your cell phone. I was at a funeral where this happened and was absolutely horrified.

NEVER say your sorry, or I know how you feel. I know that sounds weird. However in the last 3 years I have lost some major ppl in my life. Some to diease and some to freak things. However no matter how many times I have to be the 'one in the front chairs' I HATE ppl saying their sorry.
Smile. Be a friend. Say if they need to talk that you are there and coffee is on you!
(also if its a sucide, I know bad karma but I have to say this. PLEASE tell ppl not to say what a waste of a life. We just lost a good friend to this and ppl mad me soooo mad. UNTIL YOU WALKED A BIT IN THAT PERSONS SHOES....dont judge them)
Great?

It is a time for mouning and there is not really anything that you can't do. Laughing at an inappropriate time isn't cool but other than that not much.
Also keep any cell phones or pagers/video games out of there as well.

The first person to start singing "Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead" will be guest of honor at the next funeral.
Do not hit on the recently widowed spouse, either. I have seen that happen.
