Basically, everyone declared themselves to be independent of the empire. Examples: Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Wallachia and Moldova. The was the Greek War of Independence and the Russo-Turkish War.

Basically, the Empire eventually became the sick man of Europe (they were devastated economically and couldn't pay any of their debts).

There was a reason it was called the "sick man of Europe."

At the time various other powers were trying to gain territory and the Ottomans were the weakest around. Russia wanted warm-water ports, which meant they had to push into Ottoman territory. Various wars broke out with people trying to take or protect Ottoman territory (the British wanted continued balance of power, so they sided with the Ottomans).

The Greeks threw off Ottoman control, and that was a loss of territory for them. In that case the British helped the Greeks, since they thought the Ottomans had treated them unfairly and no other major power would gain land.

Because they lost wars. They did not industrialize as quickly as the Northern Europeans. Their economy and their weaponry both became weaker than the countries around them. As a result their ability to wage war, or even defend themselves properly, was severely compromised.
