I had one many years agoina custom-built mobile home that I owned, and I loved it. It was in the bathroom, close to where we needed it, and we never ran out of hot water. I didn't have to wait any longer for the water to get hot than I do now in my present house where the hot water heater is 30' away in my basement. If our hot water heater ever goes out I am seriously thinking about replacing it with an on-demand.

We had one that was gas. You do not run out of hot water but we didn't like it because it took a long time to decide to begin heating the water. Ours was a long way from the bathrooms in the basement. Also, whenever we turned off the hot water for a minute the process started all over where the heater had to decide we were serious about wanting water. We replaced ours with a standard water tank and it works better for us. However, most people seem to love their on-demand heaters. Just put it near where you need the water. They do require maintenance, especially if you have hard water.

Tankless heaters have both good and bad points. They are costly in the beginning for purchase and installation. The gas units do need a vent. Many plumbers will install them but due to the complexity, will not do service or repairs on them. If you have hard water or heavy minerals, they will clog.

I've used those in Italy, 30 years ago.. Electric. Small tank heated ,as used. No constant heating water. Heats in about 5-10 minutes, and ample supply.
Always wondered when the US would get wise.

I believe they come in both gas and elec. No, you will have constant hot water, perfect for families. Downside, high cost to upstart; upside, do not have to pay to keep water hot and replace tank every ten years, and you will not run out of hotwater. When my tank goes, I'm switching!! good luck.

One thing extra they require a vented space and an exhaust. I just bought a propane one for my bus from ebay. There is a conversation on Marey on-demand hot water heaters on http://www.skoolie.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2071&p=20791&hilit=marey#p20791

Higher up front cost but lower operating cost. If you use lots of hot water it might be worth it.
