Okay, so I'm making a music video for school using the song "Shoes". I'll be editing it to get rid of some of the language. I was wondering if it turns out to be a hit at school, and if I could burn the video to some CD's and sell them for $3 each, would it be illegal? I'm in 7th grade, btw.

If you changed the words, it has become a new song. Billy Ray Cyrus changed achin' breakin' heart to achy breaky heart and look what it did for him.

There may technically be royalties due on the use of the music, especially if you are using a recording, but I won't tell anyone if you don't. After all, we are all supposed to be paying royalties every time we sing "Happy Birthday".

Yes, it's illegal even if you only just the song. But you know you can do a lot of things and nobody has to know.

You need permission of all performers included in the work. This includes any reproduced or sampled works incorporated. If you don't have releases from everyone you are asking for trouble.
