80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

The meaning of life is to work out what it means...
Your purpose in life is to work out what it means....
The purpose of yahoo Q&A philosophy section seems to be for people to KEEP asking what is the meaning of life and what is the purpose of life....
I wish I had a £1 for everytime this question was asked on here, I would have been able to buy my own private island by now....
Life means nothing....
Life means everything....
Life is life, it is there to be LIVED, felt, experinenced. It doesn't need to be analysed. Just lived.

I have seen this question come up eight times since i have registered on yahoo answers. And that isn't a long time. I think this question is probably the biggest and hardest question to answer. Personally my opinion is there is no point or meaning to life. We may have created a purpose for ourselves, but there is no reason why we exist, we just do.

The purpose of life is to discover your purpose in the fabric of humanity and to fulfill that purpose.
It is said in Judaism, "All appointments are from God, even that of a janitor." Christianity states, "For in him we live and breathe and move about."
We are here living in the apparent paradox of destiny and freewill.
My theory, and it seems to continue proving itself in experiences not only my own, but of others as well, is that we are intended to fulfill a purpose, those purposes often cross paths with other people's thus we spin a web of action.
Because we are all born with free will, we can choose to follow or ignore our purpose, but I think that we all can be a wide range of expressions of who we are meant to be. (Example: The me that is a drug addicted beggar, the middle class me who maintains a degree of responsibility or the fully actualized me)
If we follow the path of our destiny closely, we find life seems to always have those synchronistic experiences...we seem lucky and there seems to be order and meaning in the universe.
If we on the other hand make choices that are out of alignment with our purpose, there is a corrective action, not like a punishment, because it always leads you back somehow, but more of a rebalancing.
If we pay attention to our purpose, we find the Universe/God/Source of all sends us messages, like little clues that reveal pieces of the puzzle of who we are and more importantly who we are becoming.
I think it is the process of becoming that is the central generic process of life. Look around you, everything is, was, or will be. Change is the only constant. Movement and time. Evolution. It is the unfolding of billions of plots instantaneously under the roof of one atmosphere and it's exciting and awe inspiring to think of it in this way.

We're all different, we all have different purposes. To me, the meaning of life is to make a difference. I mean, if at least one person looks at something you did and says, "Someone did that.", means that your life wasn't meaningless. It doesn't matter that they don't remember your name, and it doesn't even matter what it is that you did, because it's not for the sake of recognition. What matters is that in the process of your life, you spent time actually doing something.
