Small amounts of mercury used to be added to most batteries, because it improved their operating characteristics. The problem came when the batteries were discarded and sent to incinerators or landfills. That released mercury into the environment, creating a toxic hazard that was very hard to clean up.

The harm of mercury? Are you kidding?

Mercury is highly toxic. People toss batteries in landfills and don't dispose of them properly. If they have mercury in them that mercury can get into groundwater and the food chain.
