A little background; I have a BA Social Services degree but am currently working in the business world as an accounts receivable manager. I am attending Webster University (out of Missouri) and am currently in their MS Finance program. However, I am not 100% sure I want to only have a Finance degree and am considering switching to their MBA program since I am only in my third class. I do not have a clear direction as far as a career goes at this point. I enjoy numbers and business (not sales at all) but want the degree that will open the most doors in the long run. I want to make a nice salary and don't want to back myself into a limited corner with finance. How do these two degrees compare and what type of jobs are available with an MBA, even though I do not have an undergrad business degree. How do the salaries compare for each degree. I appreciate any and all advice.

If you were in a ranked MBA program, the degree would lead to more job opportunities than an MS in Finance Program. However, I do not believe that an MBA from an unranked program does anything for you that a BSBA wouldn't do.

In my opinion, an MBA from Webster wouldn't help you any more than the MS -- and would probably cost more to get. If you are getting good grades, I would suggest getting an MBA at a better school.

MBA is like a liberal arts master's degree for business.
most programs have a "major" or concentration. so for example, you can get an MBA with a focus in finance.

like you, i'm working but i don't know what i really want to focus my career on and don't want to limit my options, so i'm doing an MBA with a focus in DSS (decision system science, AKA solving business problems).

i hate finance, so i would never do just a masters in finance.
one of my coworkers has a masters in statistics and she is now getting an MBA because she felt limited, didn't have management background and wanted to be able to advance.

hope that helps
