Georgia Douglas Johnson and Ariel Williams Holloway were two Harlem Renaissance poets whose work you might want to look at. Jessie Redmon Fauset, as literary editor of the NAACP magazine Crisis, was responsible for publishing many poets, but as far as I know, she herself was a novelist and not a poet. I could be mistaken about that. In any event, if you look up biographical articles on Fauset, you might find leads on other women poets.

The Heart of A Woman by Georgia Douglas Johnson

THE HEART OF A WOMAN

by: Georgia Douglas Johnson (1886-1966)

The heart of a woman goes forth with the dawn,
As a lone bird, soft winging, so restlessly on,
Afar o'er life's turrets and vales does it roam
In the wake of those echoes the heart calls home.

The heart of a woman falls back with the night,
And enters some alien cage in its plight,
And tries to forget it has dreamed of the stars
While it breaks, breaks, breaks on the sheltering bars.
