Do you put some kind of product in your hair before you straighten it? I use something by Redken before blow drying it. It builds up on the sides as I use it, so I take a towel while the straightener is hot, and carefully clean it off.

My straightener gets hairspray build up on it that gets kinda brown, maybe that's all that's on yours. I just scratch it off with a fingernail. Is your iron ceramic? That's all I've ever used and never had a smell.

It could
be a sign that your hair needs a bit of a break
