C'mon Colin - you must have seen 'The outlaw Jose Wales' or 'Pale Rider'? mind you, those were over 20 years ago.
3.10 to Yuma remake and new Pitt film. They wont make them unless they're good box office. Sadly most teenagers seem to prefer High School Musical etc. When I was a lad it was westerns or war films lol
How times have changed!

I absolutely hate westerns. I remember in the 50's and 60's how they were shoved down your throat, thats about all that was on the tv, and we only had like 4 channels and to have all westerns, ugh!!!Not a Clint fan either, and I hope they don't bring 'em back on the tv anyway.

I think several factors went into killing Westerns.
When Hollywood first started out, Westerns were a staple. They were relatively cheap to make and featured a lot of action (galloping horses, gunfights, etc) that audiences loved. The first hit movie to come out of Hollywood was a western, called "The Squaw Man", and they remade that movie several times over the years.
The first death knell of the Western sounded when TV arrived.
Since Westerns were popular and cheap to make, they were perfect for TV to copy. So you saw a proliferation of popula Western TV shows. But at the time, Hollywood movie studios were terrified that free TV would put them out of business. One way they fought back was to make films that TV couldn't match (at the time), whether that was a monster stomping New York City, a big budget musical, or something with more sex and violence than TV would allow. The idea was to offer something at the movies that TV couldn't match.
Since TV was filled with successful Westerns, studio moguls figured that few people would want to pay to see the same thing in theatres, so they gradually started moving away from Westerns.
The second (and perhaps final) nail in the coffin of the Western, though, was science fiction.
Think "Star Trek" and "Star Wars".
Consider the classic line: "Space... the Final Frontier".
Before sci-fi, the Wild West was the final frontier that people fantasized about. Kids dreamed of heading out west and becoming cowboys. Space has replaced the West as that final imaginary frontier where seemingly anything can happen.
The creator of Star Trek once referred to his series as "Wagon Train in Space". And the creator of "Star Wars" remarked that it was basically an Old West movie serial moved into space.
Basically, most sci fi adventures are just Westerns moved into space and updated. These Space Operas offer all the same attractive elements as Westerns (shoot outs, chase scenes, villains, hostile tribes), but with more flash (phaser pistols and light sabres instead of pistols, space cruisers instead of horses and stagecoaches).
And the old-fashioned West of earth just can't compete with the shiny new "frontier". Kids can no longer reasonably fantasize about coming out West and being a cowboy. But they _can_ fantasize about growing up and venturing into space as an explorer...

There was one a few years ago, it was an ok movie - "Open Range". There's a new one out/coming out on Jesse James. But there really isn't any out. Instead America wants to watch things like "Saw" and "The Hill Have Eyes". So gross. But yeah, just keep pulling out the old movies. John Wayne westerns are awesome. :)
